How to change the default music service on Alexa and Amazon Echo

Make Alexa use a different music service on Amazon Echo

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

It will probably come as no surprise to many that the default music service used by Alexa is – wait for it – Amazon Music.

Alexa is an Amazon product, as is the Amazon Echo and all of its iterations, and so it makes perfect sense that the company pushes its own streaming platform.

What if your go to music streaming service is Spotify, Apple Music or Deezer though? Well, then this guide will help you change the default music streaming service from Amazon Music on Alexa and Echo devices, to your preference, whether that’s Spotify, Apple Music or Tidal.

  • Your smartphone or tablet
  • The Alexa app
  • A subscription to your preferred music streaming platform
  • An Echo device
  • Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet
  • Tap on the More tab in the bottom right corner
  • Open up Settings
  • Select Music & Podcasts from the list of options
  • Tap on your profile at the top
  • Tap on Your Default Services
  • Change to your preferences

That’s it. Once you’ve completed all those steps, you should be able to ask Alexa to play music and it will stream directly from whatever music steaming service you have selected instead of Amazon Music.
